I like a lot of different types of music despite what people may assume about me. I like country, most older music, and also rap and hip-hop. What I like about listening to different types of music is each type says things that people can relate to. The singers also make songs that are catchy and mainly easy to sing a long with. There are many different types of music you listen to depending on your mood. I dont know about other people but everytime my mood changes i have to change cds. With some of the songs i listen to there is controversy about the rappers. Some people don’t understand rap music or dislike what they talk about. That is something I do not understand because they are just rapping about things that they know and have experienced. I feel as even though they are talking about b*tches and h*es they are just saying how they feel just like country singers. I feel that music is easier to connect to if they are talking about real life things and write the music themselves. I like being exposed to new music when ever I can, and try to understand why somebody would like it. I feel that even though people may listen to different music then me I think we could still have something in common on why we listen to what we listen to. Music is something that everybody can relate to. I’m sure we all have those couple of songs we turn to when something is going wrong. Even though I listen to a wide variety of music i can still relate to at least one song in every genre. I hate that people are stereotypical when it comes down to music. I’ve known people that would say that if you listen to country your a red neck and they’ve said that white people listeing to rap are wanna bes. I disagree with that completely because it all depends on what type of music you can relate to and what type of mood you are in.

I was very excited when I found out that we would be doing a paper about music.Music for me is both emotional and therapeutic. Whether I’m having a good or bad day when I hear a song that I love it just makes my day that much better. Also, when something happens to me for instance if I lose a love one or gain a loved one I will always remember what song was playing at that time, and whenever I hear it again it always makes me remember that person and time.I love the oldies artists and songs from the 50s, 60’s, and 70’s. Some of my favorites include the Beatles, Chicago,Eric Clapton, Rolling Stones, The Doors, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, and those are the ones that I could think of. All though my childhood and still to this day my parents and family love the oldies. 104.3 is the only station that has ever been on in my moms car. What I like most about the artists of this era was that they sang from their hearts, with emotion, and to prove points. Some even changed history with their lyrics.Nowadays, in my opinion there are only a few artist that sing with such emotion. For my paper I will be researching artists from the 50’s. 60’s, and 70’s and what there songs meant ,and to what they were singing towards. For instance if there was war, freedom, and everything else that was happening during their times that they felt they need to have their voices heard. I also wanted to compare the music from the oldies to the music that is on the radio now. Just to show how different music has become.Music has such an impact on myself and thousands of others. I feel that I know alot about the music that I listen to, but at the same time I feel that it’s going to be fun to do research on some of my favorite artists.Below i posted one my favorite Beatles songs ” All you need is Love.”

Catherine Mulcahy

The Beatles

Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love. There's nothing you can do that can't be done. Nothing you can sing that can't be sung. Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game It's easy. There's nothing you can make that can't be made. No one you can save that can't be saved. Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be in time It's easy. All you need is love, all you need is love, All you need is love, love, love is all you need. Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love. All you need is love, all you need is love, All you need is love, love, love is all you need. There's nothing you can know that isn't known. Nothing you can see that isn't shown. Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be. It's easy. All you need is love, all you need is love, All you need is love, love, love is all you need. All you need is love (all together now) All you need is love (everybody) All you need is love, love, love is all you need.

Twista Hope Lyrics

 [Twista talking]
Man, I know we had a lot of tragedies lately.
I just wanna say rest in peace to Aaliyah,
Rest in peace to Left Eye,
Rest in peace to Jam Master Jay,
And everybody lost in the Twin Towers,
And everybody lost period.
All we got is HOPE!!

[VERSE 1 (Twista)]
I wish the way I was living could stop, serving rocks,
Knowing the cops is hot when I’m on the block, And I
Wish my brother woulda made bail,
So I won’t have to travel 6 hours to see him in jail, And I
Wish that my grandmother wasn’t sick,
Or that we would just come up on some stacks and hit a lick, And I (I wish)
Wish my homies wouldn’t have to suffer,
When the streets get the upper hand on us and we lose a brother, And I
Wish I could go deep in a zone,
And lift the spirits of the world with the words with in this song, And I (I wish)
Wish I could teach a soul to fly,
Take away the pain out ya hands and help you hold them high, And I
Wish God never gave the men power
To be able to hurt the people inside the Twin Towers, And I (I wish)
Wish God woulda turned they hearts righteous,
When they started to take innocent lives and become snipers, But uh
We will never break, don’t underestimate, we shall motivate,
And we gotta pray, all we got is faith.
Instead of thinking about who gonna die to day,
The Lord is gonna help you feel better, so you ain’t gotta cry today.
Sit at the light so long,
And then we gotta move straight forward, coz we fight so strong,
So when right go wrong,
Just say a little prayer, get ya money man, life goes on!!!
Let’s HOPE!

[CHORUS (Cee-Lo)]
Though I’m hopeful, yes I am, hopeful for today,
Take this music and use it
Let it take you away,
And be hopeful (hopeful) and he’ll make a way
I know it ain’t easy but that’s okay.
Cuz we hopeful!

[VERSE 2 (Twista)]
I wish that you could show some love,
Instead of hatin so much when you see some other people commin up (I wish)
I wish I could teach the world to sing,
Watch the music and have ‘em trippin of the joy I bring, (shiit)
I wish that we could hold hands,
Listen instead of dissin lessons from a grown man, And I (I wish)
Wish the families that lack, but got love, get some stacks
Brand new shack and a lack that’s on dubs, And I
Wish we could keep achieving wonders,
See the vision of the world through the eyes of Stevie Wonder, (you feel me) (I wish)
And I hope all the kids eat,
And don’t nobody in my family see six feet, (ya dig)
I hope them mothers stay strong,

You can make it whether you with him or your mans gone, And I (I wish)
Wish I could give every celly some commissary,
And the po po bring the heat on them priest like they did R. Kelly, And I
Wish that DOC could scream again
And bullets could reverse so 2Pac and Biggie breath again, (shit) (I wish)
Then one day they could speak again,
I wish that we only saw good news every time we look at CNN,
I wish that enemies could talk,
And that super homie Christopher Reeves could still walk, (I wish)
I wish that we could walk a path, stay doin the right thing
Hustle hard so the kids maintain up in the game,
Let’s HOPE

[CHORUS (Cee-Lo)]
Though I’m hopeful, yes I am, hopeful for today,
Take this music and use it
Let it take you away,
And be hopeful (hopeful) and he’ll make a way
I know it ain’t easy but that’s okay.
Cuz we hopeful!

[VERSE 3 (Twista)]
Wish the earth wasn’t so apocalyptic,
I try to spread my message to the world the best way I can give it,
We can make it always so optimistic,
If you don’t listen gotta live my life the best way I can live it,
I pray for justice when we go to court,
Wish it was all good so the country wouldn’t have to go to war,
Why can’t we kick it and just get along,
And in the famous words of Mr. King “Why can’t we all just get along”,
Or we can find a better way to shop and please, And I
Hope we find a better way to cop a keys, And I
Wish everybody would just stop and freeze,
And ask way are we fulfillin these downfalls and prophecies,
You can be wrong if it’s you doubting,
With the faith of a mustard seed you can move mountains,
And only the heavenly father can ease the hurt,
Just let it go and keep prayin on your knees in church!!
And let’s HOPE

[CHORUS (Cee-Lo) X2]
Though I’m hopeful, yes I am, hopeful for today,
Take this music and use it
Let it take you away,
And be hopeful (hopeful) and he’ll make a way
I know it ain’t easy but that’s okay.
Cuz we hopeful!

Hope is a strong and powerful word. We all hope for great things when certain tragedies have come upon us. In the song, Twista tells us that with all these tragedies, we need to go to church and praise God for hope that tomorrow will be a better day. He uses examples about the Twin Towers and street problems, but people with these problems can look up and see that they don’t have to cry today because hope is there to make a way for great things.

This song was used in the movie Coach Carter. Coach Carter was a great movie about a basketball team that was misguided on and off the court. The kids were in gangs, selling drugs, not going to class, and many other delinquent activities. Most of them grow up in families that go to jail and see others do these and feel that’s what they are suppose to do. Instead, they should try hard in school to get out of the ghetto and become what they dream of being. This song puts hope into your thoughts about the students on the team that they can overcome these obstacles and become not only better basketball players, but better student athletes which is the goal of the whole movie.

I really like this song because it has a great beat and Twista has an interesting style of rapping. He is very fast with his rapping and it really adds to his message of hope by giving it an up beat flow. The message that it gives is very motivating to keep on moving even when not everything is going the way that you want it to.

I can honestly say that music consumes every minute of my life. I am constantly listening to music and without it, it’s just too quite. I think there’s a relationship between music and people in the lyrics that artists choose to write. Everyone loves different genres because of the ideas they write out and the things they can relate to. Depending on which mood I may in, I love listening to every genre of music & yes that includes country, which happens to be where my favorite band is established. Rascal Flatts has been one of my all time favorite bands since they first started writing. I own all four of their CDs and can probably recite every lyrics to every song on every CD! I’ve been to three of their concerts and just really enjoy their music. Now don’t get me wrong, country is not the best genre of music. There are many other amazing groups and people that are talented in the things they do, but I feel like country music can relate to people a lot easier then other genres. Country artists sing with such compassion and theyre passionate about the things they write about. Rascal Flatts sing mostly love/breakup/being strong/soft music, yeah of course I’m a chick and love that, but I love it more because I think I can relate it to a lot of parts of my life. Listening to it makes me go back in time and remember or look ahead to the future and what is yet to come. One particular song off their most recent CD is called “Stand” and its basically about being alone but they write about how no matter how many times you’re pushed to the limit, you’ll get through it. For anyone that is interested in listening, if you’ve never heard of it, I have the site for the video below. Now besides Country, I love alternative/emo type music, what an opposite huh? Ive just recently got into the music about two years ago because of a friend that introduced a couple bands in that genre and it has grown on me more than anything. I’ve learned that just because music is completely different from something you may think you would enjoy, if you truly listen to the listens and think about the music talent they have, you’ll enjoy everything about the music.

When I am ready to write a paper I usually skip the brainstorming part of the process. Mostly because I know well ahead what topic the paper is going to be about and the potential topics are already in my head once the professor tells the topic of the paper. However, with this paper, since I haven’t had time to think of a topic, because of all the other work I needed to get done (Not including English work)

Okay, I know this highly unorthodox for me but I am thinking of writing about Johnny Cash and how his musical lyrics stand for life’s meanings. I don’t at all listen to any country music in fact I find very annoying (no offense to any one who loves country music) I like what his songs speak about, especially his famous “I Walk the Line” and “ The Ring of Fire”. I saw the movie “Walk the Line” and actually liked it, and I think it is possible to write a music research paper about his music and life. Plus, I bet I could find a lot of information about him and his lyrical meanings.

The other idea I am toying with is music during the 1940s and how the music from that era influenced the society of America at that time. I like the easy listening type of jazzy music, and the music could possibly have social and economic issues discussed in its lyrics, which could help me writing a research paper about. Plus with WWII going on I bet those song lyrics emphasis patriotism and social awareness.

Both topics I could have quite a bit to talk about. On one hand, the Johnny Cash topic I could talk about his life and music, and the other hand I could talk about maybe three specific singer of the 1940s era and discuss their music and influence in society.

Like I said before, I am really not sure what to do, so these are the topics I chose are just brainstorming ideas. Most likely I will pick one of these as my music research topic, but if anyone has any better ideas I like to hear them!

Here are the lyrics to Lovestoned by Justin Timberlake

She grabs the yellow bottle
She likes the way it hits her lips
She gets to the bottom
It sends her on a trip so right
She might be goin’ home with me tonight

She looks like a model
Except she’s got a little more ass
Don’t even bother
Unless you’ve got that thing she likes
I hope she’s goin’ home with me tonight

[chorus]
Those flashing lights come from everywhere
The way they hit her I just stop and stare
She’s got me love stoned
Man I swear she’s bad and she knows
I think that she knows

She’s freaky and she knows it
She’s freaky, but I like it

She shuts the room down
The way she walks and causes a fuss
The baddest in town
She’s flawless like some uncut ice
I hope she’s goin’ home with me tonight

And all she wants is to dance
That’s why you’ll find her on the floor
But you don’t have a chance
Unless you move the way that she likes
That’s why she’s goin’ home with me tonight

[chorus]
Those flashing lights come from everywhere
The way they hit her I just stop and stare
She’s got me love stoned
Man I swear she’s bad and she knows
I think that she knows

[chorus]
Those flashing lights seem to cause a glare
The way they hit her I just stop and stare
She’s got me love stoned from everywhere
She’s bad and she knows
I think that she knows
[ Lovestoned lyrics found on http://www.completealbumlyrics.com ]

Now dance
Little girl
You’re freaky, but I like it
Hot damn!
Let me put my funk on this one time

[chorus]
Those flashing lights come from everywhere
The way they hit her I just stop and stare
She’s got me love stoned
Man I swear she’s bad and she knows
I think that she knows

[chorus]
Those flashing lights seem to cause a glare
The way they hit her I just stop and stare
She’s got me love stoned and
She’s bad and she knows
I think that she knows

[chorus]
Those flashing lights come from everywhere
The way they hit her I just stop and stare
She’s got me love stoned
Man I swear she’s bad and she knows
I think that she knows

[chorus]
Those flashing lights come from everywhere
The way they hit her I just stop and stare
She’s got me love stoned
I think I’m love stoned
She’s got me love stoned

I think that she knows, think that she knows, oh, oh
I think that she knows, think that she knows, oh, oh

[chorus]
Those flashing lights come from everywhere
The way they hit her I just stop and stare
I’m love stoned from everywhere and she knows
I think that she knows
Think that she knows, oh, oh

And now I walk around without a care
She’s got me hooked
It just ain’t fair, but I…
I’m love stoned and I could swear
That she knows
Think that she knows, oh, oh
She knows, she knows, oh, oh

Justin Randall Timberlake was born on January 31st 1981 and is an American pop singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actor. Justin has a lot of CD’s and Timberlake has been my all time favorite singer from 7th grade till now. The reason why I like him is because I can easily understand his music and actually can hear the words in his music. I do have a hard time understanding other music because I can only hear 80 percent with my hearing aid in and without my hearing aid it goes down to 40 percent. Just listening to Justin Timberlake over and over makes it easier for me to know the words and to know what he is singing. It may to seem pretty boring, but at least I like some music because music is very hard to live without. In Justin Timberlake’s spare time he likes to play basketball with the other ‘NSYNC members, listening to R&B types of music, and hanging out with his father, Paul. “A few years back, at the age of twelve, he appeared on the Disney Channel’s MMC (Mickey Mouse Club) after beating out 5 000 other kids for the spot” (Justin’s bio). I could listen to Justin Timberlake CD’s everyday and all day long even if i was in a bad or good mood. I do enjoy listening to Rap songs more, but Justin can be pretty close to Rap. Listening to music isn’t my favorite thing to do because like i said before I can’t really hear the words in the songs so it does make it very boring to not hear the words, but I can hear some words and the background noise. It is easier for me to get some homework done while listening to music. Justin will always be my favorite.

My first thoughts for my music research paper were to write about the influential songwriters and songs of the 1920’s through early 1930’s. I would also include a little history of what was going on during the time and possibly show the shift from jazz and Charleston to bluesy types of music after the stock market crash. I find that era to be incredibly interesting and loved learning about it in high school. I think now that I have done a little bit of research that doing all of that will be a lot of work and too much information for one paper. I am not too sure on how well it will be perceived. It may come off as more of a history paper than an English research paper on music.

I then researched other topics in which I could write about and since I am going into the medical field I would love to now write more so on the topic of musical therapy. The topic would somewhat go along with numbers three or four on your suggestion list of ideas for this paper. I find musical therapy to be a genre is on the rise in many medical professions. I have also found an article on a woman who instead of prescribing prescription drugs will use musically therapy, which I thought was incredibly interesting (I will have the site listed at the bottom of the page if you would like to check it out). I have also found another site devoted completely to musical therapy, including its definition, history, what therapists do and where it could be used. (I will also provide you with that web site as well). I am also going to do a little more research to see if I can find any information of using musically therapy in the dental field. Going into that field of study I think that it would be really interesting to find a dentist that uses music to relax patients or replace medications during procedure. I really think that music therapy would be a great topic for me to research and write about.

I can sit here and say that I like only one genre of music, but I would be lying. I like to listen to rock, hip-hop, and a little country from time to time. When I’m up late at night, I like to watch those Time Life informercials who try to pursuade people to by those cds. I probably know almost all of the songs from the disco and slow jams commericals they show.  My favorite type of music is R&B and old school R&B. I love R&B because some of the songs I feel, express how I feel at certain times. Every since I was little, I would always sleep with the radio on. I still do to this day. My friends and family call me a human radio because I can remember songs from years ago and still be able to sing them word for word. R&B, I think is the type of music that makes people feel good. When people feel sad, they can always find that one song to dedicate to those they have lost or a song that makes them feel good.

Some of my favorite R&B artist from the present and past are Rihanna, Chris Brown, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Carrie Underwood. I know that Carrie Underwood is country, but her songs have that certain power that make me think about my life. Like for instance, her song Jesus Take the Wheel, when it first came out I didn’t really listen to the lyrics. But when I finally did, I almost got emotion because in the lyrics the song talks about how the character in the songs has struggled for so long and wants to give up, but because she has a child she prays to Jesus to help her make her life better. There were times that I felt like giving up and had nowhere else to turn, but when I sat down and thought things through, I realized that my life isn’t over and that those things could be fixed. Music helps heal the world (ex. We Are The World) and helps those who are in need. It is full of life and it makes me who I am. Music makes me happy and I am very passionate about it. No matter what genre it is, I will never judge because we all like our own things.

When we got this topic to write about for this blog I started to think about some of my favorite bands of all time.  I could come up with several like Nickelback, The Ramones, The Whitestripes, and my favorite AC/DC.  As you can see I like several types of music from pop to hip hop, and rock to R&B.  The only type of music that I cannot stand to listen to is, country music.  For some reason I just don’t like that type of music.  For this music blog and the music paper I would like to focus on my favorite group AC/DC.  I can talk about the type of songs they sing and the meanings behind the lyrics.  I could talk about how their songs have changed music for the better.  I would have to talk about the members of the band and how the lead guitarist always wears short shorts when playing a concert.  He actually became very famous for doing this.  Whenever you see someone wearing that types of pant you have to give the lead guitarist his props for making it famous.  Even today young teens love to listen to AC/DC’s music.  I myself got into this band because of my father.  My dad loves AC/DC and he would always listen to it on road trips or just casually around the house.  Many people probably do not know that AC/DC is from Sydney, Australia.  I know that I always thought they were from Europe but they are Ausies.  AC/DC has several top hits like some of my favorites, Hells bells, Thunderstruck, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, T.N.T, Highway to Hell, and Back in Black.  They have a total of 14 different albums ranging from all different types of lyrics.  Now a day it is very rare for a band to make 14 different types of albums.  They are lucky if they get 5 or 6.  To get an idea of how the bands sounds listen to a clip from youtube called AC/DC Thunderstruck.  The link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvoeeq-BH4w.  Just watching that one clip of one of their most famous songs you can realize how passionate that I am about this band.

-Adam Smith

Country music is the only genre that I am able to listen to at any time of day. There are songs that I can relate to when I am sad, happy, mad, and anything else that I may be during the day. I feel that country music is like this because the artists who write the music typically reach back into their own past experiences when they write their songs. Songs about being with your family and friends seem to be the basis of country music. Other genres write about how they feel at a given point or about random stuff that doesn’t always have a meaning. With country music there’s a meaning for every song that I’ve ever heard. Whether it be about going and partying with your friends, mourning the death of a loved one, remembering those who died in war, remembering your own past, and even the feelings people have when they fall in love. This kind of gives a listener a kind of intimacy with the artist because the way that country songs are written and sung allows the listener to relate to them. I am a fan of nearly all genres of music, but country is the only style that allows me to relate to it in this way. Rap, hip-hop, rock, R&B, and punk are all styles of music that I like, but I can’t always relate to them. I can listen to say rock, punk, and hip-hop when I’m in an upbeat mood, and rap when I’m angry. How I feel has always depicted what I listen to at all times unless I have no control of what I listen to. Country artists such as Brad Paisley sing a wide variety of songs where I am able to listen to something that he sings at all times no matter what my mood is. Other artists like that are Kenny Chesney, Trace Adkins, Rodney Adkins, Garth Brooks, Carrie Underwood, Gretchen Wilson, and Johnny Cash. All of these artists sing a wide variety of music that can be listened to no matter the time of day, the mood your in, or who you’re with.
